» Reasons Men Avoid Doctor Visits     | Back

It is a commonly known fact that most men don't visit their doctors on a regular basis. This is very true for men who are under the age of 40. Many doctors have argued that this is the reason for the lower life expectancy of men compared to women. However, why do so many men avoid doctors visits? One of the reasons why men don't visit their doctors is the amount of time they will have to wait in order to be seen. Many men are busy and are constantly on the run, and simply feel that they don't have the time to sit in a waiting room.

Many men are also under the false impression that health care is too feminine. This is a belief which is further encouraged by society. Many men and healthcare professionals feel there is a bias towards men in the healthcare community. Nurses and doctors have traditionally been portrayed as famales, and though this is no longer the case today, the health service sector to many men still has a feminine feel.

Many men also find it humiliating to talk about personal health issues. Many men find sharing sexual or mental problems with close friends to be difficult, let alone a doctor which they may not be familiar with. The reason for this is that men aren't used to discussing these types of issues with people, and avoid it.

Men often feel that there is no need to visit the doctor unless there is something wrong or there is an emergency. In many cultures, men are taught to be strong and hide their emotions. Because of this they may not understand how to seek help for problems they may have. Many men also feel that visiting the doctor is a sign of weakness.

A lot of the issues above are a result of society, and how it conditions men. As difficult as it may be, it is important for men to change their mindset related to healthcare. Visiting the doctor on a regular basis may allow men to spot problems which could become serious over time. Waiting until you have an emergency to visit the doctor may not be a wise idea.

Men also have a tendency to engage in risky behavior which can lead to serious health problems down the road. Engaging in unprotected sex, heavy drinking, and reckless behavior are all factors which lead to a lower life expectancy in men.
